This course is aimed at those students who have previously completed a pottery course. It will give you the chance
to explore new ways of seeing and developing personal ideas and to broaden your existing knowledge and develop
new skills. There will be projects to follow that will enable you to expand your skills in pottery: throwing, hand building, surface decoration and glazing. The more independent advanced students will be encouraged to further
develop personal ideas and styles of making.

About this course

Intermediate Students:
- Explore the potential of clay from wet soft to leather hard.
- Make work using one of the following techniques: slab building - coiling - press
- Sprigging- moulding - casting and throwing
- Further develop your existing knowledge of glazes and methods of application
- Explore and develop a variety of decorative and textural surfaces on functional or sculptural work.
- Give your work a more professional look and improve the quality of finish

More advanced students will be able to:
- Set the parameters for their own project
- Work independently with the support of a professional tutor.

There is a charge of £2.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £17.50 per bag/ £8.75 per half bag.

Through practical demonstration, group and individual tuition, discussions, PowerPoint and hand-outs.

Course programme

We will cover various fundamental techniques for making ceramics: hand building, throwing and surface decoration
at intermediate level.

New skills of glazing and firing will be taught. In addition, we will cover ways of developing and expressing personal ideas throughout the classes. Ideas and skills will be developed through visual research translating this into making your ideas. Alongside this you with be sharing inspiration with fellow students.

You will get feedback from your tutor which on which courses to progress. Within City Lit you could progress onto the City Lit Ceramics course - VR710, the Ceramics Portfolio Course - VR711 or the Diploma Course in Ceramics - VR712, all of which are structured courses.
