About this Course

Take your first steps on the horticultural career ladder with this basic introductory course where you will gain the skills to grow and maintain plants.

You will learn how to use different tools and machinery to help with the maintenance of plants. This course runs for a year.

What I would highlight: I learned so much from this course, it built my confidence in myself, I met some lovely people who are now friends and it was a distraction from my mental health problems. Most of the tutors were lovely and went out of their way to help you. Recognition for doing well in exams and practical work.
What could be improved: Lack of communication between tutors, lack of communication from tutors to students, one tutor was a bit of a bully and made you feel like you were incapable. Not enough revision given to students before exams, getting behind with lessons due to tutors absence and then student getting the blame. Also not enough equipment and supplies to go around the class. On a few occasions there was also lack of stationary.

Course programme

What will I study?
  • How to grow and maintain plants and lawns
  • Hard landscaping – including fencing and paving
  • Plant propagation
  • Introduction to different machinery used within the industry

    What added value will I receive?
    • During your studies, you will be able to make full use of the College’s horticulture unit, Mining Meadows
    • Practical experience with the Forestry Commission
    • You will be taught working first aid procedures

      What can I progress to?
      After completing this course, you can progress onto the Horticulture Level 2 course or you could move onto employment in the horticulture industry.

      What are the entry requirements?
      • An interest in horticulture
      • GCSE grades E – F
      • Satisfactory references and interview
      • For 19+ students, previous experience is taken into account
