Overview Primary care is central to the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Throughout the world, the provision of preventive, treatment and rehabilitation services is rooted increasingly in primary care.The BSc Primary Care (Practice Nursing) course aims to equip you to develop new skills to use in the different practice and organisational settings in which you work. The course is focused on practice and practical application, and is relevant to the varied communities from which our students are drawn.The PgDip consists of 120 credits. Course programme

Course Content

The course is for practice nurses, it provides the knowledge and skills needed to deliver a diverse range of services within general practice. The course can be tailored to meet individual practice and development needs due to the wide range of module options available.

The course will help prepare students to meet the many challenging demands of working within general practice, particularly in relation to the essential and additional services of the new General Medical Services contract.

When you have successfully completed the taught modules plus your portfolio, you will qualify for a BSc (Hons) degree.

PgDip Primary Care (Practice Nursing) Core modules include:
  • Research Methods [15 credits]
  • Philosophy and Politics of Primary Health Care [15 credits]
  • Key Concepts of Practice Nursing [15 credits]
Optional modules include:

Students have a number of options to obtain their 75 credits for those students wishing to complete their PgDip.

A sample of the optional modules which are at 15 credits and popular with practice nurses are as follows:

  • Asthma/COPD
  • Cervical Cytology
  • Diabetes Care
  • Education in the workplace
  • Clinical Assessment in Primary Care
  • An introduction to long term conditions
  • Key concepts in practice nursing

Students have the option of exiting with 45 credits to receive the award of Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert). In order to receive this award, students must have successfully completed 60 credits, which would include one of the core modules – Key Concepts in practice nursing.

The programme is taught at our campus at Northampton Square. The Programme Director and other members of the practice nursing team have considerable experience and expertise in the field of practice nursing and advanced practice.
