Overview
This course has been designed for graduates (from any degree subject background) who would like to become a nurse. The PgDip Nursing (Mental Health) course at the University of West London offers an exciting, rewarding and challenging career. You will support people with a wide range of mental health conditions such as:
- anxiety
- depression
- stress-related illness
- personality disorders
- psychotic disorders i.e. Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder
- dementia
- eating disorders
- drug and alcohol addiction.

As a student studying mental health nursing you will achieve a PgDip Nursing (Mental Health) and become registered as a Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Funding Arrangements
Fees for the September 2017 intake only, will be paid by the Department of Health, with eligible students able to apply for a bursary.

Why choose this course?
You will learn how to assess, plan, promote and support a person’s recovery, facilitating their involvement and enhancing their level of control over their condition (this is called a recovery focused approach). Importantly, you will also learn how to care for your client’s physical health needs.

You will learn how to build effective, compassionate relationships with people and their relatives and carers. You will develop an understanding of the legal context of the work of a mental health nurse and be able to identify whether and when someone may be at risk of harming themselves, or someone else.

You will learn to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for example with psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, health visitors, social workers, police, relevant charities, local government and housing officers. Your aim will be to deliver high quality mental health care, in partnership with clients and their families and carers (co-production), underpinned by current research findings.

Entry requirements
You must have a first degree 2:2 or above (in any subject), plus two GCSEs including English and Mathematics at grade C or above; or equivalent, evidence of literacy and numeracy at Level 2.
You need to show evidence of recent study in the last five years as well as completion of an extended CV which will be assessed by the course team against specified learning outcomes.

The University have recently invested £1 million in the development of the Fountain House, Reading site and this includes a fully equipped simulation centre, helping you to practice your clinical skills in a safe environment.

Our courses are developed inconjunction with our partners in the NHS, the voluntary and independentsectors, ensuring you gain the skills and experience required to secure a jobon graduation.
You will spend 50% of your time in practice (supporting people with a mental health need, together with their families and carers) and 50% in the classroom. Your learning in practice will include caring for people in hospital and out of hospital ie: in the community. UWL currently partner with the following healthcare organisations in Berkshire:
