About this course

Introduction:
This Open College of the North West (OCNW) course is designed around the subject of services to people. By the end of the course you will have knowledge of the history of caring services, structure and functions of services, community care, settings and relationships in care.

Study Mode & Location:
This 16 week course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
During this course you will have the opportunity to study the following aspects of services to people:

  • Knowledge of the history of caring services.
  • Structure and functions of service.
  • Community care.
  • Settings.
  • Relationships.


You will participate in group activities and discussions using case studies and video clips as a way of learning. You will also develop your skills through note taking, research and essay writing. Your personal tutor will give you one-to-one support to ensure you achieve this qualification.

Assessment:
Assessment is a three step process which involves:

  • a short piece of work (500 words)
  • an extended piece of work (1,200 words)
  • a portfolio of notes.


Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This Level 2 Unit will enhance your curriculum vitae, and therefore could improve your employment prospects. Successful completion of this course will allow progression to other Level 2 Units in a related subject, or progression to Level 3 units if you achieve Grades 4/5 in areas such as:

  • Social Issues in Health Care.
  • Approaches to Social & Community Welfare.
  • Principles of Care.


Alternatively you may join an Access Course in areas such as Nursing Midwifery and Health-Related studies or in Social Youth & Community Work (you must have at least 2/3 recent Level 2 qualifications at Grades 4/5).

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
