  • I find Coventry a great University but some courses dont receive the same attention as others. Overall is a great university offering a lot of great services thinking about the students. The city life is the worse part, but if you want to be active you just have to explore what the city has to offer. The tutors are really nice and helpful making the lectures interesting and appealing. The university is investing in new buildings and offering new and better facilities for all courses. A lot of new buildings and technologies all over Coventry, as well as trips for all course with financial help.

  • Incredible, met friends that will last my life time and got to take part in a high level of sport plus started my career as a product designer. Where I will end up in the future really has no limit, the university has helped me every step of my 4 years of study. My course had modules in all types of design which was peef ct for me. Also the university held a competition to win a 9 month product design placement which I won and now have 9 months work experience on my CV before I even graduated. Also the university have a Addvantage programme where you can pick and extra module to study for a term that's outside of your subject, I chose photography one year and have used the skills I picked up in all variations of work now.

This Product Design course runs in 2016/17.

This course has a world-wide reputation for producing top-
class designers, offering them the opportunity to innovate, create, explore and develop in an exciting atmosphere supported by staff who are experienced both as teachers and professional designers.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Product Design offers a range of skills that can be applied broadly to create all areas of products for people to use. Our specialist areas include consumer product design, industrial product design, and design for sports products and toys. Some of our graduates work at the cutting edge of product design, generating new concepts and innovations for home and professional contexts.

If you choose this course you will benefit from: Strong associations with leading employers;

  • studying within an award-winning School of Art and Design:
winners of the Sir Misha Black Award for Innovation
in Design Education 2007 and the UK’s only Transport and Product Design ‘Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning’ funded by the Higher Education Funding Council in 2005;
  • visiting industry professionals who take an active part in your education and offer a visiting speaker programme;
  • help applying for placement opportunities in established design companies, recent examples include Seymour Powell, Cambridge Consultants, Design Works
and 1HQ;
  • excellent facilities and use of substantial workshops and equipment for 3D model making which develops your practical skills and expertise to prototype
your designs.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course offers the options of a three-year BA (Hons) degree or four-year MDes or BA (Hons) degree that include the third year ‘Professional Enhancement’.

On the first year of the course you will learn 2D
and 3D techniques for generating, developing and communicating innovative product design ideas and concepts using manual and digital media supported by historical, environmental and technological contextual studies.

During the second year you will focus on your own particular strengths and interests. Learning will involve branding and design for different market places as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD), and you will learn how to evaluate your work in relation to identified objectives.

The Professional Enhancement Year; the third year of
the four-year degree, involves entry to a national or international competition and involvement in collaborative projects with industry. There are opportunities to apply for placements in industry, or to study abroad in an international exchange placement programme.

The final year of your three or four year BA(Hons) may include entry to a national design competition, while the final year for the MDes qualification (4th year) includes research and design management modules. Both BA (Hons) and MDes qualifications conclude with a major design project. At the end of their degree students are expected to exhibit in our prestigious Degree Show.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

You will have a base studio with your year group and course colleagues which is where you will learn through design exploration, discussion, sketching and making. There will also be a series of lectures with associated seminars and workshop practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

Fees and Funding

Please note that tuition fees will be payable in each of the four years of the 4 year MDes or 4 year BA (Hons) with work placement courses. You can take an optional placement year during the MDes course (making the course length 5 years in total) without a requirement to pay tuition fees for the optional placement year.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: coursework, tests, essays 30%; practical or project work 45%; working in group etc.10%; presentations, posters etc.15%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
