Proof Reading and Copy Editing

Your Course
This course has been designed for those who would like to learn and practise some of the skills that you will need if you are to work as a proof reader or as a copyeditor. Most books and magazines begin life as a typescript on a word processor. They will then either be printed straight from a computer disc or be sent to a typesetter, who will then turn the contents of the disc into "proofs". A proof reader checks these proofs to make sure that they are accurate and that they correspond to the author's original typescript.
A copyeditor prepares the author's typescript for the print process, whether it is to be from a computer disc or from a typesetter. The aim is to ensure that what the author has to say is clear to the reader, and to find and solve any problems before the work is printed. There is no guarantee that, by attending this course, you will find work as a proof reader or as a copyeditor, but you will become much more aware of the importance of clear concise written English. There is no doubt that your spelling and English grammar will improve, and you should also have a lot of enjoyment along the way.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to:
· practise using the British Standard proofreading symbols on a variety of different texts and layouts
· gain confidence with points of English grammar, which will help you to recognise common everyday mistakes in written text
· practise rewriting poor English written by different nationalities
