Participants will be able to: understand the purpose of the POVA Scheme. know which sections of health and social care delivery are included within it. compare the current scheme to the enhanced system recommended by the. Bichard Enquiry and its expected implementation date. know the definitions within the Scheme. respond appropriately if a prospective employee is on the list, either provisionally or permanently. know when to refer an employee for inclusion on to the list and what information will be required. be familiar with the suspension and appeal system. - the POVA list has been in operation since July 2004 and is a measure that all employers working within the adult service sector need to know about
- referencing the POVA list is part of the CRB checking for each new employee or whenever an employee changes to a post with increased contact with users of the service
- there have been many concerns raised over its usage and how this might affect both staff confidence, retention and recruitment
- there has also been some confusion as to when and in what circumstances a staff member would be referred for inclusion onto the list

Expected outcomes: ~by the end of the course participants will be able to
- understand the purpose of the POVA Scheme

- know the definitions within the Scheme
- respond appropriately if a prospective employee is on the list, either provisionally or permanently

- be familiar with the suspension and appeal system
- discuss with HR what action should be taken regarding members of staff who have been dismissed due to harming vulnerable adults before the introduction of the Scheme
- support staff with professional reporting (whistle~blowing) issues
- answer staff concerns about the Scheme
- relate the POVA Scheme to the practice of adult safeguarding and the operation of multi agency procedures
- be in posession of correct referral documentation
Nature of training:
Exercises will range from lecture style input to discussion and small group work.
Hand outs will be provided to reinforce all theoretical input.
Each organisation will take responsibility for providing copies of policy and procedure to participants, plus the county policy where relevant.
If this session is presented in half a day this will be more in a lecture format with less group work but some time for questions.
