The art. 1 of Law 56/89 defines: "The profession of psychologist includes the use of cognitive and intervention tools for prevention, diagnosis, habilitation-rehabilitation and psychological support activities aimed at the person, the group, the social organizations and communities. It also includes experimentation, research and teaching activities in this area. " The psychologist is a professional who works to promote the well-being of people, groups, social organisms and the community. He deals with psychopathology, but not only. Other important areas of intervention concern a multiplicity of situations, personal and relational, which can be a source of suffering and discomfort. The psychologist's activity has the aim of encouraging change, strengthen resources and accompany individuals, couples, families, organizations (eg school, company, etc.) in particular critical or difficult moments. Among the many fields of application of psychology we can indicate hospitals, counseling centers, schools, the court, services for children and adolescents, therapeutic communities, residences for the elderly. New sectors are those of penitentiary psychology, cross-cultural, neuropsychology, emergency, traffic, sport and well-being in a broad sense. To become a Psychologist in Italy it is necessary to graduate in Psychology (Specialized Degree 3 + 2), to take a State Exam following a one-year post-graduate internship and to enroll in the professional register of an Italian region or province. Without subscribing to the Register - Section A - you are not psychologists, but only doctors of psychology. Graduates in Psychology can be enrolled in Section A of the Register and in Section B doctors in Psychological Techniques, following the passing of their respective state exams. Registration is the necessary condition to be able to work and exercise the activity.
