About this course

Course objectives

- Know the fingering for the notes of C and D / F and G major used on the recorder (descant and/or treble)
- Play the recorder with some control of breath, articulation and intonation
- Play tunes on your own or with a group
- Identify different styles and periods in recorder music
- Read basic music notation in the treble clef.

Requirements

Please bring your instrument(s), as well as a notebook, pencil and eraser.
Please bring your own copy of Brian Bonsor, Enjoy the Recorder Book I (descant or treble) [approx. cost £6.50]. This book will be used for Level 1: modules 1 & 2. Additional music will be supplied by the tutor.

Course programme

- An introduction to the basic technique of recorder playing: fingering, breathing and articulation
- Playing in unison (with others) and easy duets
- An introduction to a range of recorder repertoire in a variety of styles
- Music reading (treble clef) and basic music theory.

Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (please bring your own instrument). Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study. To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes on least 4 days per week).
