This course covers advanced recorder techniques for players with at least two years of experience. You will learn how to double tongue and use a wider range of fingerings and articulation, as well as working on expressive techniques such as vibrato. The course will include a mixture of technical work and exercises, as well as advanced pieces and some ensemble repertoire.

About this course

- Use double tonguing for fast passages
- Play solo and ensemble music, using alternative fingerings and vibrato for a greater range of expression
- Enjoy an improved level of general technique in your recorder playing.

You will need to bring your recorder(s). Music and exercises will be provided by the tutor. You can borrow, and may wish to buy, the music being studied.
Treble players may wish to purchase 10 Advanced Studies by Elizabeth Cooper [c. £7.50]
Descant / Tenor players may wish to buy Advanced Studies in Recorder Technique Book 1 by Guus Haverkate [c. £9].

Course programme

- Double tonguing and varied articulation
- Using alternative fingerings to enhance dynamics and tone colour
- Improving finger control
- Expressive techniques, such as vibrato and some avant garde playing styles.

Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (please bring your own instruments). Sessions will also include class discussion and group technical exercises. To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes on least 4 days per week).
