About this course

- Expand the range of notes you can play
- Scales and pieces in keys including up to 2 sharps and flats
- Play with good control of breath and articulation (tongued and slurred)
- Play with good intonation and understand how to modify your intonation when playing alone or with others
- Play a part in an ensemble piece
- Recognise and perform various styles of recorder music
- Read and interpret music notation.

Please bring your instrument(s), as well as a notebook, pencil and eraser.
You will need your own copies of the following, which will be used for all three modules of Recorders level 2
1) Steve Rosenberg (ed.), The Recorder 1 [approx. £11.50]
2) ABRSM, Time Pieces volume 1 (for descant / treble recorder) [approx. £7.95]
These books will be used throughout Recorders Level 2 (modules 1 - 3). Additional music will be supplied by the tutor.

Course programme

- Technique of recorder playing: fingering, breathing and articulation
- Playing in unison with others
- Playing in parts in a small ensemble
- A wider range of recorder repertoire in a variety of styles
- Music reading and music theory.

Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (please bring your own instrument). Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study. To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes on least 4 days per week).

This course continues with Recorders: return to playing 2 You may also be ready for Recorder consorts and ensemble, where you will explore a wider range of styles and repertoire, playing a larger ensemble, and one per part in a consort. Your tutor will advise. You may also be interested in general Musicianship classes and Music Appreciation courses.
