Brief Description of the Course:

A fun way to learn about the basics of horticulture, in a suitable environment, with excellent gardens for use as a learning resource. Weekly plant identifications. A theory course with a small amount of practical to underpin some areas of the syllabus.

Entry Criteria:

A keen interest in horticulture with a level of enquiry into plants and gardens. It is suitable for the beginner or some more experienced.

RHS Level 2

Unit 1 – Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation & Development

¨ Plant Classification, Structure & Function (5 credits)

¨ Plant Nutrition & the Root Environment (3 credits)

¨ Maintaining Plant Health (3 credits)

¨ Understanding Plant Propagation (3 credits)

Total - 14 creduts

Unit 2 – Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment & Maintenance

¨ Understanding Garden Features, Plant selection & Planning (5 credits)

¨ Understanding the Choice, Establishment & Maintenance of Garden Plants& Lawns (3 credits)

¨ Understand the Production of Outdoor Vegetables & Fruit (3 credits)

¨ Understand Protected Environments & their Use in Plant Cultivation (3 credits)

Total – 14 credits

The course covers theory, but relevant practical skills are also taught to underpin the theory, but also for the sheer fun of it!

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Most people want to learn and improve their own gardens. The qualification does though open a door to further progression or to employment in the industry. Some have progressed to full-time horticultural courses, some have developed a business, and others have gained employment in garden centres or nurseries.

Entry requirement – a pass on the RHS Level 2 Certificate.

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment: Weatherproof clothing and suitable footwear to allow you to venture out in inclement weather! Secateurs and a knife are tools which are a valuable addition to a gardener's toolkit.
