This Royal Yachting Association one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers. It fulfils the requirements for professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of safe haven.It satisfies the requirements of some categories of commercial work afloat. Candidates for the RYA Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster Offshore, and advanced powerboat examinations are required to possess a first aid certificate.It is a one-day course and it will teach students how to:
- Demonstrate artificial ventilation and chest compression
- Turn a casualty into the recovery position
- Apply treatment for shock
- Apply pressure to a wound and control bleeding
- Outline the treatment, recognition and treatment of hypothermia
- Describe the treatment for asthma attacks, burns, diabetic emergencies
- Describe the treatment for shock and heart attacks
- List the precautions needed when handling a spinal injury
- Immobilise a fracture
- Prepare for a helicopter evacuation
- Use Maritime Category C Medications
Venue
This course is held Alfriston Youth Hostel. The location is a Sussex flint house partly dating from 1530 set in a large garden overlooking the Cuckmere Valley, a mile from the the village of Alfriston.
NOTE: Alfriston YHA cannot book course places.

This course can also be provided on-site at your venue and we give significant discount to group bookings. Our students have ranged from Dingy school instructors to harbour pilots and lifeboatmen. As well as being professional first aid instructors our teachers are also active sailors.
