About the course:
The salon services course provides an underpinning knowledge or working in either a hair or beauty salon. Throughout the course, we arrange trips to local salons plus organise make-up demonstrations from local beauticians as part of the unit on personal presentation. We also hold a competition where you will get the opportunity to work on a model to achieve a hairstyle and makeover ready to be judged in the 3rd term. We also hold presentations from local Connexions services to highlight career paths and further study thorughout the course.

There are 7 units to complete to receive the full qualification in either hair or beauty. For students wanting to do a hair and beauty combined course, 9 units will need to be passed.

Course Content:
The units you will be studying are as follows:

Unit 01 Finding Out About Customer Service

• Unit 02 Basic Reception Duties
• Unit 03 Personal Presentation
• Unit 04 Following Health and Safety
• Unit 09 Industry and Occupation Awareness

You are able to chose the beauty or hair route:

Hair option:

• Unit 05 Introduction to Hairdressing Services
• Unit 06 Introduction to Basic Perming and Colouring

Beauty option:

• Unit 07 Applying basic make-up
• Unit 08 Providing basic manicure

Learning Style:

• You will also be attending a theory lesson to work on assignments and to build a portfolio of evidence. You will be assessed in 3 ways, by your practical work, presentation of assignments, on line test (at the end of the course).
• You will work on assignments and complete them together whilst working on computers.

Equipment Requirements:

• When studying for this qualification you will be required to wear a uniform (tunic top) when working in the salon with black trousers and black closed in toed shoes cost approx. £19.95. forms to be collected from college.
• You will be required to buy equipment to work on which is £180. which you can buy at Capital hair and beauty. We have the forms to give you.

Assessment:

• You will be required to research information for your assignments, which means you need to go into hairdressing salons to investigate a topic, e.g. What uniform do the staff in the salon wear? What are your rules on make up and hairstyles? Why do clients chose one particular salon rather than another?
• Each assignment will be judged on creative ability (presentation) and working methods (how much help did you get?). You will also receive grades such as fail, pass, credit or distinction. There are 7 assignments to complete to receive the whole qualification in either hair or beauty, but 9 assignments for a qualification in hair and beauty combined.
• You will also need to complete an on line test at the end of the course.

Progression:
After completing this course you will be able to progress onto an apprenticeship, or full time study at college starting a 2 year programme in hairdressing at NVQ level 1 or 2.
