SCIENCE GCSE APPLIED
It is intended for students who have not yet got the qualifications for Advanced level work. Students completing the course sometimes continue to the Advanced Science course but a few continue to A/S levels or BTEC Courses. The course develops scientific skills, research skills and knowledge. The work concentrates on how the skills and knowledge are used in the workplace.

What/How will I be studying
The course consists of four mandatory units

Unit 1: Science in the Workplace
In this unit you find out about the types of people who work with science and use scientific skills. You will also find out that those who work with science are very aware of the safety implications of their work. You will need to use research skills to investigate:
  • how science is used
  • safe working in science
This is assessed as coursework.

Unit 2: Science for the Needs of Society
This unit is about how science is used to benefit us in our everyday lives. In particular you will learn about some of the science used by people working in specific science-based occupations in order to help us maintain and improve our quality of life. E.g. medical professions, agricultural scientists, environmental scientists, engineers. This is assessed by a written 90 minute external examination.

Unit 3: Developing Scientific Skills
You will learn about and use the skills that microbiologists, analytical chemists and materials scientists require in the work that they undertake. You will carry out a range of practical tasks involving some of the skills used by scientists, including: following standard procedures, handling scientific equipment and materials, recording and analysing scientific data. This is assessed coursework.

Unit 4: Using Scientific Skills for the Benefit of Society
You will learn about how biologists or medical scientists monitor living organisms, some of the processes used by chemists to make useful products, the function of the components used when engineers make and test an electronic or electrical device, the advantages of using machines in the workplace. This is assessed as coursework.

What skills will I need and be developing during this course?
  • You will need to become numerate and be able to express scientific ideas in your own words
  • You will need to measure things carefully and accurately
  • The aim is to build these up through the work that you do
How is the Course assessed?
Unit 2 is externally assessed by a written examination, which consists of a number of structured questions. The exam lasts an hour and a half. You do this exam in January and repeat it in June.

The other three are internally assessed. This means that the student builds up a portfolio of work for the unit, which is assessed by the teacher and then moderated.

What career opportunities are there?
Most students who take this course continue to Advanced level courses but there are a few who take up employment in related areas. Whatever you choose next to do the Applied GCSE will be a firm foundation for any pathway.

and what else?
  • You would be working in well-equipped laboratories with good technical support & help
  • There are excellent IT facilities and an up to date Library to help you in your work
  • There are also a number of interesting and relevant industrial visits and some fieldwork
