Explore psychological, physical and social techniques of personal safety and defence, body language, assertiveness and much more. Build on your life skills and develop your confidence and personal power. Construct and practise a simple reliable toolkit of skills to prevent and protect from a wide range of violence. As far as possible, given time constraints, the teaching will be tailored and adapted to the expressed needs and concerns of the individual student. Men of any age or fitness level are welcome; learning from other students' expertise and life experience is a key benefit.

About this course
- Demonstrate an awareness of your surroundings
- Generate solutions to threatening scenarios
- Adapt and use boundary skills to manage threat, communicate, involve others and get help
- Adapt and use personal safety skills to provide bystander assistance and encourage additional peer support to manage risks
- Perform a number of simple defensive techniques based on good use of the body
- Escape from simple common holds
- Perform successful strikes with sufficient accuracy and power
- Demonstrate and target aggressor’s vulnerable area.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
The class will be led by the tutor who demonstrates and participates in some of the practical work. The participants will be doing active work. Through talks, discussion and practice, students will develop a comfortable and efficient use of the body. Practical information and discussions to demystify issues on personal safety and defence will be held. As far as possible, given time constraints, the teaching will be tailored and adapted to the expressed needs and concerns of the individual student. The participants will be encouraged to share experiences if they wish to do so.

Course programme
- Each class consists of some discussion, sharing of experiences, scenario analysis and practical physical body work and role-play
- Expectations of how violence arises and how you might generate solutions to threatening situations
- How to feel and control the body, progressing on to maintaining this when threatened verbally or physically
- How to manifest and project confidence, which is much easier when you are confident in your ability to cope physically, so time will also be spent addressing how to respond physically if necessary, including threats and attacks from a variety of directions, front, rear and when prone on the floor.
