Course programme
This shoe making course will start with an introduction to using a variety of industrial machines that will be used throughout the duration of the sandal making process. The different types of sandal constructions including slotted, skeleton and thong will be explained, before you create your own design using the available materials and components.
You will then be taken through foot anatomy, size fitting system and last measurements using contemporary Italian lasts. Under the guidance of the tutor, you'll learn from the beginning how to measure your feet in order to design and develop your own sole, insole and upper patterns as well as being able to cut and sectionalize all the individual pieces of the patterns for their sandal.
The course will then move on to take you through the different process used in making and completing a pair of sandals. The tutor will demonstrate the skills needed to identify the different upper materials and hand cutting techniques as well as an introduction into the different types of edge treatments, such as, folded, bagged and binding techniques.
The course includes:
- Understanding leather quality and grades for sandal making
- Understanding of closing machine and techniques
- Technical aspects of strappy/strip sandals
- Footwear accessories, straps and how to attach fastenings
- Flip flop and toe post/thong styles
- Insole and sock preparations and treatments
Please note:
While every effort will be made to meet your size requirements, please be aware that it may not always be possible to make the shoe in your desired size. This is not a design course and the shoe style you make will be determined by the capabilities of the studio. Leather is provided for your sandal, but you can also choose to buy your own under the guidance of the tutor.
