Course review:

Safety is an essential element of site management training within the construction industry. This site management training course will help managers to organise, monitor and measure health and safety performance on site, whilst maintaining safe systems and safe methods of work.

The SMSTS site safety training course, includes the following elements:

  • The Health & Safety at Work Act and other regulations relevant to the management of site safety within the Construction Industry
  • Site set up, CDM (Construction Design Management Regulations), risk assessments and method statements
  • Scaffolding, working at height, electricity, excavations, demolitions, and confined spaces
  • Accidents and the associated legislative requirements (RIDDOR)
  • The need for control measures and adequate communication to maintain a good health and safety culture within the workplace.
  • A basic understanding of fire prevention & control, control of hazardous substances, construction design management regulations (CDM), working at height, personal protective equipment (PPE), manual handling, accidents and first aid.
  • Carrying out site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
  • Understanding and appreciating the need for proactive and reactive monitoring.

Candidates will be expected to interact during the course and will be assessed using a multiple choice question format at the end of the course.

  • Full attendance is essential and candidates will be continually assessed during the course and will be required to complete assignments. There is a multiple choice assessment at the end of the course. Examination (compulsory and consists of 25 multiple choice questions.


Successful candidates will receive the CITB SMSTS certificate, which is issued after completion.

The SMSTS site management training course is a five day course, and those who pass the course receive a certificate, which has a validity of 5 years. For those who have previously passed the 5 day training course, there is a 2 daySMSTS Refresher. The Refresher course is designed to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, and includes an overview of the legislative changes relating to site management and their impact on site safety in the workplace.

Having successfully completed this course, a natural progression would be to the NEBOSH Certificate.
