Social work is all about people. Social workers form relationships with people and help them find solutions to their problems. As adviser, advocate, counsellor or listener, a social worker helps people to live more successfully within their local communities. Social work also involves engaging with clients’ families and friends, as well as working closely with other organisations including the police, NHS, schools and probation service.
Our exciting social work degree gives you the opportunity to study the theories and research you’ll need to be a successful professional. You'll complete three placements to develop your practical skills in social work and related settings, supported by a qualified practitioner. If you want a challenging and varied career with opportunities to work with people at times they most need it, social work may be for you. Bursaries are available and career opportunities are excellent.
The establishment of the Social Work Partnership between Leeds Local Authority, Wakefield Local Authority, University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University has led to a more co-ordinated approach to training of social work students. This also includes a broader remit to support students in their transition and development within the social work role in our partner Local Authorities.
Please note that we are currently revalidating the programme, so the structure of the course and the current modules are subject to change.

Course programme

The Social Work BA offers an opportunity to achieve a degree and a professional qualification in social work. Students are required to undertake 170 days of direct placement, supported by practice teachers and assessors.

The course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge and skills, including the reflective and analytical skills, needed to become a competent social worker. On successfully completing the course you’ll be able to work in a variety of social work settings.

In your first and second years you’ll consider psychological, sociological and social policy perspectives on social work practice. You’ll learn about the legal basis of social work and will demonstrate your competence in IT. You’ll examine the impact of disability and mental health on social service users. In these two years you will complete two social work placements.

In your third year you’ll study both child and family and adult social work and undertake a final year project, a 30-credit, 10,000-word dissertation. You’ll complete your course by doing a final placement in a social work setting.

Placements are an integral part of your training. Read "Study abroad and work placements" tab.

Please note that we are currently revalidating the programme, so the structure of the course and the current modules are subject to change.
