Course programme

The course will explore the ideas - both musical and non musical - that inspired the creation of this new Russian sound, by focusing on individual composers who lived and worked in St Petersburg in the 19th century and exploring their music. Main composers to be covered are Mussorgsky, Borodin, Balakirev, Rimsky Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Rubinstein, Glinka.

Tutor presentations, discussions and students contributions, and listening to recordings from the works discussed.
