Statistics AS and A2



INTRODUCTION
This course is highly recommended to students who are studying AS/A level psychology, biology, and geography or business studies. Statistics has become an important subject in its own right and this course is particularly appropriate for students who want to learn how to use Statistics appropriately and effectively.

The course does not put too much emphasis on the mathematical background to the subject and only simple algebraic skills are needed.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course aims to develop your ability and confidence in using statistical techniques and interpreting statistical results. It is in this way that it will be particularly useful for students studying the subjects listed above.

AS CONTENT
The statistics and probability studied in GCSE Maths will be developed in the 3 modules of the AS course. You will also meet new ideas, including Hypothesis tests, correlation and regression analysis. Apart from statistical analysis you will develop your ability to apply and interpret results.

AS ASSESSMENT
Each module is assessed by a written examination. There are no coursework projects that count towards the assessment, although some ideas may be developed by means of project work.

A2 CONTENT
The three A2 modules will enable you to build on the work of the AS course. Also, other topics such as Statistical Process Control, Acceptance Sampling and Analysis of Variance are introduced.

A2 ASSESSMENT
This follows the same format as the AS assessment.

HOW WILL I STUDY?
You will experience a wide variety of teaching styles. You will be given some formal teaching and be asked to practice techniques. You will also be encouraged to explore new ideas for yourself, sometimes using I.T.. You can expect strong teacher support with all of your work

You will make extensive use of graphical calculators and computers throughout the course. It will be possible to hire or purchase your own graphical calculator through the college at a discount rate. You will be encouraged to take advantage of tutorial facilities if you need extra support. You will monitor your work and progress with regular review sheets and periodic assessments in addition to the formal examination assessments.

You will have 5 hours of lessons per week. In addition, it is recommended that you spend an average of 5 hours per week on self-study.

Resources such as text books, work sheets and past examination papers are all provided. You will be expected to provide your own writing equipment and calculator.
