Course programme
This course is taught by experienced specialist SpLD / dyslexia academics and practitioners aiming to equip you with the skills and insight to support older children and young people who may have specific learning difficulties linked to dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, Asperger’s (SpLDs).
Such difficulties become more complex for children as they get older, and the approach the their support needs to be developed appropriately. This is why this course's prime focus is on children over the age of 11 years, and young adults.
You will gain not only a professional qualification through the content of the certificate modules, but also the opportunity through the additional modules and the dissertation to more deeply investigate and analyse practice, theory, educational challenges and the real-life support needs of these older children and young people. This will be developed within a rigorous and practice-based framework, that is, through integrated scholarship and practical placements, enabling you to make informed positive changes which are learner-centred and effective for every (very different) individual.
Central to this is the placing of individual needs and preferences firmly at the centre of what we do, in an informed, learner-centred, holistic manner.
You will be expected to undertake placements (not necessarily in London) as an integral part of this course.
Students unable to complete the full Master's programme can choose to leave after successful completion of the two core 30 credit certificate modules, with a qualification accredited by the British Dyslexia Association (BDA). The application for this accreditation in working with older children and young people with Dyslexia / SpLDs is currently in progress. It will sit alongside our PG Certificate in Teaching Adult Dyslexic / Specific Learning Difficulties Learners in Further & Higher Education, which already has BDA approval.
Modules you will take towards the completion of this course:
- Postgraduate Certificate: Definitions and Theories of Dyslexia & SpLDs (30 credits, year-long)
- Postgraduate Certificate: SpLDs and Effective Learning: Professional Practice (30 credits, year-long)
