Course programme

Course structure

This course is taught by experienced specialist SpLD / dyslexia academics and practitioners aiming to equip you with the skills and insight to support older children and young people who may have specific learning difficulties linked to dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, Asperger’s (SpLDs).

Such difficulties become more complex for children as they get older, and the approach the their support needs to be developed appropriately. This is why this course's prime focus is on children over the age of 11 years, and young adults.

The programme enables those new to or experienced in this field to investigate and analyse practice, theory, educational challenges and real-life support needs of these older children and young people - all within a rigorous and practice-based framework of integrated scholarship and practical placements, enabling you to make informed positive changes which are learner-centred and effective for every (very different) individual.

This is done by placing their needs and preferences are firmly at the centre of what we do, in an informed, learner-centred, holistic yet rigorous manner.

Students will be expected to undertake placements (not necessarily in London) as an integral part of this course.

The Postgraduate Certificate appeals to a wide range of carers and professionals (teachers/teaching assistants, parents/carers, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs), social workers, psychologists, youth offending workers and so on). It is also designed for those not yet working in this area but seeking a new career, who will need to undertake placements.

Accreditation is currently being sought from the British Dyslexia Association, to provide a professional qualification in working with older children and young people with Dyslexia / SpLDs.

Modules you will take towards the completion of this course:

  • Definitions and Theories of Dyslexia & SpLDs (30 credits, year-long)
  • SpLDs and Effective Learning: Professional Practice (30 credits, year-long)
