Who is this course for?
This course is for people who would like to gain employment as a Teaching Assistant.
What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Some experience of working with children is desirable; this could be in a voluntary or family situation. Reasonable levels of English and Maths are required but support can be given during the course. All students must be prepared to comply with vetting procedures for those working with children. This course is Level 2.
What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?

You will learn how to support teachers in relation to pupils learning, including those with special needs. Placement is an essential part of this course. Units covered : Provide support for learning activities Support Children's Development Help to Keep Children Safe Support Literacy & Numeracy Support a child with disabilities or special educational needs Contribute to positive relationships Provide effective support for your colleagues
What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Large and small group teaching, seminars and tutorials, case studies, role play and one-to-ones.
How will we assess your progress on the course?
You will build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your competence. Assessment will also take place in the workplace.
What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
National Vocational Qualification Level 2 - NVQ2
What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
From January 09 to July 09 (two terms) you will need to attend a placement for two days a week in a suitable setting where you will fully participate as a teaching assistant student. You will need to consolidate your learning by completing tasks at home.
What can I do after completing this course?
You can gain paid employment as a teaching assistant, progress to NVQ3 or Foundation Degree.
Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
College registration fee £10 and CRB check £36, no other costs other than stationery, pens, notebooks. Text books can be borrowed from the College library.
