Systems Networking (Leading to CISCO CCNA)

Course content:
This course is in four 18 week parts:-


Semester 1


OCR Level 3 Certification for IT Practitioners Unit 15 (18 weeks):
Network Fundamentals which provides the student with the knowledge and skills to identify the 7 layer OSI model, TCP/IP protocol, physical layer devices and functions of a MAC address.


Semester 2


OCR Level 3 Certification for IT Practitioners Unit 16 (18 weeks):
Routers & Routing Basics which provides the knowledge and skills to identify elements of a router, configure a router, commands to configure access lists and trouble shooting.


Semester 3


OCR Level 3 Certification for IT Practitioners Unit 17 (18 weeks):
Switches which provides the knowledge and skills to implement variable length subnet masking (VLSM), configure and monitor intermediate routing protocols.


Semester 4


OCR Level 3 Certification for IT Practitioners Unit 18 (18 weeks):
WAN Technologies which provides the knowledge and skills to demonstrate scaling IP addresses, identify WAN services and demonstrate PPP, ISDN and DDR systems.
The course is designed to prepare the student to take the CISCO CCNA examination which is becoming the basic requirement for the majority of network posts.

Taught classes, on-line assessment and practical activities are used throughout the course.

Assessment procedure:
The individual units will be assessed by CICSO set and marked, on-line examinations. In addition the candidate can elect to take the external on-line examination for the overall CCNA award on successful completion of all 4 semesters.

Qualifications achieved:
Unitisation (approved external qualification) Level 3, Information and Communication Technology (SSA 6), PW B

Progression opportunities:
This qualification prepares students for employment in jobs involving network installation, and troubleshooting.
