Course content:
This training is intended for masters, officers and ratings serving on tankers who are required to undertake additional training and familiarisation in accordance with:
The Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997 / Marine Guidance Note (MGN) 95 / STCW: Regulation V/1, and STCW Code Section A - V/I para 1-7.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has agreed with the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) that the specifications described in the MNTB document â€OEtraining of masters, officers and ratings on tankers†May 1998 will satisfy the above requirements for approved training undertaken in the United Kingdom.
This Tanker training programme meets the MCA/MNTB requirements and following successful completion of the course, candidates will be eligible to enter second stage training ie the advanced training programmes for GAS / PET / CHEM. (Many tanker operators insist all staff or trainees appointed to tankers for the first time have completed the familiarisation training course.)
Familiarisation training is common to all types of tanker.
Extract from MGN 95:
2.1 Ratings assigned specific duties and responsibilities related to cargo or cargo equipment (eg pumpman) and all officers on tankers are required to have completed:

2. a tanker familiarisation training programme approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) covering the syllabus given in paragraphs 2 to 7 of section A-V/1 of the STCW Code; or
3. at least 30 days service under the supervision of qualified officers on a tanker of less than 3000 gt engaged on voyages not exceeding 72 hours.
Course structure:
The course runs over two days and 100% attendance of time-tabled lectures during that period is a requirement.
