What are the entry requirements?
You need to be qualified in a subject at least one level above what you will be teaching and you need Literacy and Numeracy skills at a minimum of Level 2.

  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2

  • Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2

  • Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.


What qualification will I receive?
You will attain the City & Guilds 7303 Certificate (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector PTLLS)at Level 3.

Where can it lead?
After successfully completing the PTLLS Certificate you could apply for a place on a Certificate in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Cert Ed/PGCE Year 1). This can lead to a Diploma in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Cert Ed/PGCE Year 2).

What will I study?
You will learn about the the professional role and responsibilities of the teacher/trainer, gain an introduction to the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation, develop knowledge and understanding of session planning, and plan your own session(s), produce a scheme(s) of work, practise delivery of a teaching session through small scale micro teach sessions(s).

How will I be taught?
A wide range of teaching strategies will be used on the course. These will include lectures, pair and group work, use of technology and audio visual aids.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on your teaching skills either through an observation of your teaching in the workplace or through an observation of a micro-teaching session in the classroom with your peer group of students. You will need to complete a range of assignments which will be submitted as part of a portfolio for assessment. You will also be involved in self assessment and peer assessment.

What support is available while I am on the course?
Each student will have a personal tutor.
