ART - TEXTILES AS / A LEVEL
The emphasis of the course is on developing your own ideas and creativity with constant reference to contemporary art practice. It is a mainly practical course where you can choose to broaden skills in a variety of textile mediums. The atmosphere in the art studios is alive with a diversity of ideas and methods of work. Many students gravitate towards the art studios in their own time to continue their work in a supportive, highly creative and very happy environment.

What and how will I be studying? AS - Year 1
There are two units in AS - 1 coursework module and 1 exam module.

This first unit of the AS course is intended to introduce you to a range of different textile processes and materials as well as giving you knowledge and skills that will allow you to develop your own individual creative working practices. You will study a variety of techniques including constructed textiles, machine embroidery and fashion. Working from a given theme you will develop your recording and research skills whilst being introduced to a wide range of historical and contemporary artists. It is an art based course and, as in the other courses on offer, you will be expected to produce observation drawings and designs and to keep sketchbooks of your research and ideas. Towards the end of this first unit you will be given the opportunity to generate and develop your own ideas in response to the work of others and your understanding of the theme, before working towards a well considered final piece or pieces.

The theme for the second unit is set by the exam board and takes the form of a given word and set of starting-points. You will be given the exam paper at the beginning of February and with your teacher's support identify your own personal intentions in response to your interpretation of the theme. The exam will be taken at the end of the AS course over a period of 8 hours and should represent the culmination of your work so far.

A2 - Year 2
The emphasis of the A2 year is on independent study to enrich your own personal work, integrating contextual studies with your personal practice. This can take many forms and is usually a very visual study including some larger pieces of work if it is appropriate. Students are also encouraged to look at the work of the previous A2 students and apply the same rigorous process of analysis as they would to a professional artist's work. Again, question papers will arrive in February for you to use as starting points for the end of year examination.

How is the Course assessed?
All AS and A2 units are marked separately to give you an 'overall' grade. Work journals are marked alongside practical work. You will receive an art and design qualification upon successful completion of this course.

What career opportunities are there?
Many of our students go on to Art College in a variety of areas such as Film, Animation, Graphics, Industrial Design, Fashion and Textiles as well as Photography and Fine Art. We also welcome students who have an interest in and an aptitude for the subject, but who do not intend to take the subject beyond AS or A level.

and what else?

  • Students may take two AS levels in Art - Fine Art and/or Textiles.
  • The A2 year is completed with an exhibition of students' work for assessment. We hold a private view evening to which friends and family are invited to come along for a glass of wine, some good conversation and a celebration of students' amazing achievements.
