The Diploma in Counselling is an appropriate qualification for a wide variety of professionals, from teachers to nurses and managers. It is also ideal if you are considering a career change or simply want to become more self-aware. An aim of the course is to provide you with professional training in counselling, which will enable you to gain both a sound theoretical framework and the practitioner skills required to work safely and effectively as a counsellor.

About this course
You will need to show evidence of successful counselling training to certificate level 3, which has involved a minimum of 120 hours of tuition
In addition you will be asked to submit a written piece of written work of 500 words as to why you wish to be considered for a place
You need to provide two written references, one personal and one professional from people who have known you longer than 2 years (cannot be from a family member or friend)
Desirably, hold and be able to provide proof of a grade C or above in English Language

Course programme
You will be expected to demonstrate a thorough theoretical understanding of the concepts all models of Counselling including PCC (Humanistic) / Psychodynamic, CBT, TA & Gestalt. In addition you will need an understanding of ethical boundaries and equality and to be able to demonstrate personal experience of working as a Counsellor.
Mandatory Units of Competence are:
Unit 2: Person-Centred Approaches to Counselling
Unit 6: Counselling Skills, Development and Practice
Unit 7: Comparative Theories and Approaches in Counselling
Unit 8: Continual Personal Development in Counselling
Unit 9: Human Development in Relation to Counselling
Unit 10: Client work in Therapeutic Counselling
Unit 11: Counselling for Loss and Grief
Unit 15: Counselling Related Research
You will also need an approved placement and you will be informed as to when you will need this on commencement of the course. You will need to complete 100 hours of one to one counselling practice and it will be mandatory to supply regular client/supervision logs, reports and reflections to show evidence of placement. You will also need to compile a portfolio of evidence of completed units over the 2 years, ie assignments/assessments and reports etc. Completion of 40 hours of personal therapy over the 2 years is a mandatory requirement of the course.
