Is this course right for me?
This course is an exciting exploration of three-dimensional design that helps develop relevant skills needed to gain employment in the design based industries.
What will I be learning?
Specialist pathways within this course include: Contemporary crafts; Interior and spatial design and three dimensional design; products and materials. In year one you will explore a range of materials and processes relevant to three-dimensional design, this could include working in the core areas of ceramics, metals, plastics, textiles, wood and IT based design programmes. Specialist workshops, in areas such as furniture and glass, are also offered. The creative practice is supported by modules in design history, digital processes, design communication and materials practice. These will support and develop the skills involved in your chosen specialism.
How will I learn?
Your performance in each module will be assessed through coursework. You will be assessed through a variety of methods which may include: essays, production work, portfolio work, presentations, case studies, work based learning, practical assessment, critiques and report writing. You will be given assessment criteria in each case, which are used to judge the extent of your achievement.
Self directed study and individual research are also key learning methods. Modules are introduced through briefings, discussion and practical workshops. Seminars and critiques encourage group interaction and personal critical reflection. The programme is assignment based and requires students to engage in independent study and directed research activity. Coursework is assessed at the end of every module and indicative grades awarded to all assignments. All work is exhibited at the end of the year and students also work toward external exhibitions of their work.
Trips and visits, alongside a programme of visiting practitioners, also form a crucial element of the way you will learn.
What can I do afterwards?
On successful completion of the Foundation Degree you may wish to progress to the final year of the Three-Dimensional Design, Design Maker or Interior Design Honours Degree at the University of Plymouth. You are also able to apply for other appropriate courses. Many students opt to set up their own businesses or gain employment as freelance designers, or find employment in the design industry.
