Course assessment:
Like all Applied A levels, there is one examined unit in the first year and two that are assessed through coursework, the pattern is the same for the second year, so the whole A Level is one third exams and two thirds coursework. The double award is exactly the same. Examined units will be taken in January for the single award units and in June for the double award units

What can this course offer me?
Applied Travel and Tourism is one of the newest courses offered at KGV. We are excited at the opportunities that this course offers students and are have enjoyed seeing how our stuents have enjoyed the course and gone on to work in the industry or study related subjects at university. There are no specific academic entry requirement to take this course, other than the standard college entry grades at GCSE. Students do not have to have taken GCSE Leisure and Tourism or BTEC Travel previously. Students need an ability to work on coursework and take exams, as two thirds of the work is internally assessed coursework and one third is an exam. What you need most of all is an interest in Travel and Tourism and a willingness to work hard and get involved!

What will I learn?
  • a wide variety of activities including organising an event
  • individual support for coursework and exams extra qualifications delivered as part of your study - Welcome Host - (the UK's leading customer service qualification)
  • Year 1 (single award) you will take an exam in January based on the changes the industry has seen. you will do 2 pieces of coursework, one is based on a visit to Manchester Airport and is about Customer Service and the other is a travel guide based on 2 destinations of your choice
  • Year 1 (double award) as above plus a summer exam on international travel and 2 coursework assignments one on Working overseas and one on planning journeys
  • Year 2 ( single award) you will run an event for coursework and take an exam about tourism development. You will then have a choice of which other coursework unit you complete

Which other courses link well with this subject?
Most of them! It clearly links well with subjects like Geography, Classics, Archaeology, Modern Languages, Business and Applied Leisure. . It is really useful for students who want to work in any career where customer service is important

Future Opportunities
There are an increasing number of Event Management, Travel, Tourism, Hospitality and similar degrees at university, some of these are linked to other courses such as languages or Business Studies. It is also a useful course which leads into a variety of jobs. 20% of the population work in the Travel and Leisure industries, there are plenty of opportunities! Previous Students have gone on to study Public Relations, Law, Fashion Buying, Marketing, Geography as well as jobs in and courses about the Travel industry

Is there anything else I need to know?
This is a great course that all students find fun and interesting. You need to be organised, but we will support you to do better than you thought you could!
