The course centres on the travel and tourism industry, and incorporates general business skills in addition to specialist units. You will complete work experience within the travel/tourism environment as part of the course and take part in residential visits in the UK and abroad. You will use cabin crew training facilities with aircraft seats and equipment, and be taught by enthusiastic and knowledgeable lecturers.

• Selection is by interview. • You should have at least 5 GCSEs at minimum grade C including English language and maths or Level 2 Diploma in Travel & Tourism with Merit profile or equivalent. • Mature students will be assessed on relevant experience, clear motivation and a reasonable standard of attainment in written English. Course Content Methods of study and assignments are largely student activity centred and will include individual and group work. This course is designed on a unit basis and will be assignment based using individual and group work which will require the completion of investigations, reports and presentations. You must pass all units in order to achieve the Extended Diploma in Travel & Tourism. Year 1 Core Units: • Investigating Travel & Tourism • The Business of Travel & Tourism • The UK as a destination • Customer Service in Travel & Tourism. Specialist Units: • Preparation for Employment in Travel & Tourism • The Cruise Industry • European Destinations • Reps • Residential Study Visit • Retail • Passenger transport Year 2: Specialist Units: • Tour Operations • Handling Air Passengers • Hospitality • Marketing Travel & Tourism products and services • Work Experience • Special Interest Tourism • Entertainment for Holidaymakers • Visitor Attractions • Long Haul Destinations • Responsible tourism • Events, conferences and exhibitions You will have the opportunity to gain further qualifications during your course including: • Numeracy (if not achieved C at GCSE) • Cabin Crew • First Aid (approx. £30 additional cost) In order to understand the travel and tourism industry it is necessary to visit real work environments. Visits both in the UK and abroad are an essential part of the course and you must attend. It is therefore wise to budget for at least £600 for year 1 and £250 for year 2. How will I be assessed? Your work, grades and attendance will be continually assessed throughout the year by College tutors and will be verified by staff appointed by BTEC. Progression With good grades in your BTEC studies, you may progress to higher education courses within tourism. Students who completed this course have gained places on courses such as BA (Hons) Tourism Management, BA (Hons) Events Management and BA (Hons) Marketing Management at institutions such as Bournemouth University, Oxford Brookes University and University of Plymouth. This course will prepare you for a successful career in the travel and tourism industry, progressing into management positions after suitable experience has been gained. Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31st August on the year of enrolment - no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31st August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases, please contact us for full information.
