About the course:
This is a full time 15 hour a week English course for students from the European Union (or have home status) who are aged 16 to 19 years old on 31st August 2008. It is delivered using up to date teaching materials and technology, including a multi media laboratory. Students will have the opportunity to learn English with students from other countries and to not only improve their English but to learn about living in the UK and English culture and society.
Success Story:
Students take Skills for Life exams in May or June and our pass rate for 2006/2007 was 89%. Students who have completed a year at this level can then continue to do a second year of English.
Course Content:
The classes include core and skills lessons so that students can improve all areas of their language skills: grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In the second half of the year students can also study Maths. There are also enrichment classes, which will introduce students to the local area, English culture, history and institutions. Students can take part in enrichment activities such as trips to Portsmouth Dockyard and Salisbury, as well as sports activities such as football.
Learning Style:
Classroom delivery using a variety of teaching styles: pair work / group work / use of multimedia / listening laboratory.

Assessment:
Students are assessed every half term and take Skills for Life Exams at the end of the year.
Progression:
Students can progress to either Skills for Life Entry Level 3 or to Level 1. In some cases, students can progress on to vocational courses within City College.
Additional Information:
Attendance - One year, Full Time, 15 hours a week. Daytime study for 3.5 days; students are expected to do between 3 and 4 hours study per week at home. There are no tuition or exam fees.
