About the course:
This is a full time 15 hours per week English course for students from the European Union (or have home status) who are aged 16 to 19 years old on 31st August 2008. It is delivered using up to date teaching materials and technology, including a multi media laboratory. Students have the opportunity to learn English with students from other countries and to not only improve their English but to learn about living in the UK and English culture and society.
Success Story:
Students who are under 19 take Skills for Life exams in May or June and our pass rate for 2006/2007 was 89%. A number continue at the college, either studying English or on a vocational course.
Course Content:
The classes include core and skills lessons so that students improve all areas of their language skills: grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students also study Maths as part of their course. There are also enrichment classes, which introduce students to the local area, English culture, history and institutions. Students can take part in enrichment activities such as trips to Portsmouth Dockyard and Salisbury, as well as sports activities such as football.
Learning Style:
Classroom delivery using a variety of teaching styles: pair work / group work / use of multimedia / listening laboratory.

Assessment:
Students are assessed every half term and take Skills for Life Exams at the end of the year.
Progression:
Progression can be onto a vocational course within the college i.e. Motor Vehicle or onto a Skills for Life Level 1 English course.
Additional Information:
Attendance - One year, Full Time, 15 hours a week plus 2 hours Maths. Daytime study for 3.5 days; students are expected to do between 3 and 4 hours study per week at home. There are no tuition / exam fees.
