Course programme

This course links selected major Netherlandish artists to their political, religious, social and economic contexts. As well as the religious art of the era we will also cover the genres of portraiture, landscape and still-life. Robert Campin, Jan & Hubert Van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hieronymus Bosch are among the painters covered in the Autumn term. The Spring term will show the growth of new secular art forms during the Reformation, including the landscapes of Pieter Bruegel, as well as showing how the Counter Reformation inspired new altarpieces from Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. The Summer term will include the secular art of the newly formed Dutch Republic, including the portraits of Rembrandt, the landscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael and the interiors of Jan Vermeer.

Termly enrolment is possible for all courses and applicants must be over seventeen years of age. Fees are payable in advance for all courses and each course is devised for a limited number of students, so early enrolment is advisable. Students wishing to transfer from one course to another will be subject to a transfer fee. Fees are non-refundable. Please note: Heatherley School of Fine Art reserves the right to cancel, combine or reschedule courses, or adjust fees, or substitute lecturers as necessary.
