About this course

Knowledge of Visual Basic.NET to Level 2 or equivalent is required: This may be as a result of:
· Successful completion of the FC0004MQ or FC0006MQ Visual Basic.NET Introductory course (or equivalent) OR
· Previous programming experience in Visual Basic.NET or similar language (e.g. C++) to a level equivalent to Level 2

Course Content: The course is aimed at individuals who want an introduction to programming using the industry-standard programming language Visual Basic 2008 (Visual Basic.NET). Students may wish to start Visual Basic programming in order to pursue a leisure interest, to carry out a project associated with their employment, or to further their career. Each week a number of programming topics are covered and practical exercises set to demonstrate the theory behind them. Topics to be covered include:

· Intro to Visual Studio 2008 / VB.NET environment (IDE)

· Intro to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts

· Namespaces, classes, objects and variables

· Variable scope and access modifiers

· Variable arrays

· Use of common Toolbox controls such as: Textbox, Radio Button, Check Box, List Box, Combo Box, Picture Box, Dialogs, Main Menu

· Test planning and documentation

· Debugging tools

· String manipulation

· Input validation

· Graphics methods

· Printing methods

· Multiple forms

· Structures and records

· File management

· Databases

Special Features: College certificate on successful completion of the course

Progression: On successful completion of the course students will be able to undertake a Level 4 course in Visual Basic.NET programming.

Entry Requirement:
Knowledge of Visual Basic.NET to Level 2 or equivalent is required: This may be as a result of:
· Successful completion of the FC0004MQ or FC0006MQ Visual Basic.NET Introductory course (or equivalent) OR
· Previous programming experience in Visual Basic.NET or similar language (e.g. C++) to a level equivalent to Level 2
Good IT literacy and an ability to think logically are also needed. In addition, since much of the study will need to be undertaken out of lesson time, an ability to work independently with self-motivation and determination will be required to successfully complete the course.
