Who is the programme for? This programme is for anyone who wishes to develop counselling skills and explore their own personal development. It is of particular value to people working in the caring professions and those whose work involves an element of counselling skills. Due to the experiential nature of the training, this course may not be appropriate for people currently undergoing treatment for a mental health disorder.

What will I study? The following areas will be studied on this programme:- * Induction and Introduction to Counselling * Introduction to the Person Centred Approach * Self Awareness * Active Listening * Verbal Communications * Empathy Stage One * Power Issues in Counselling * Putting it all together * An awareness of two other modes of counselling * Endings NB: This is an experiental training course, during which you will be expected to share, in confidence, your thoughts, feelings and experiences with other course members in small and large groups.

Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? To successfully complete the programme, students must attend a minimum of 80% of the sessions and prepare a short learning statement. Students will be expected to show a commitment to learning and be working towards establishing the core conditions of counselling. Completion of a student learning journal is required, which will help towards completion of the 1500 word reflective assignment. A tutor observation of counselling skills takes place during the programme. The reflective assignment is marked externally.

Future prospects? Successful completion of this programme is one of the requirements for the next level of training in counselling skills.

When will the programme start? The programme will start in September.

How long will it take? This programme runs over ten weeks. It is offered on a Saturday morning in the Student Services Guidance Centre at the Town Centre Campus between 9.30am and 12.45pm. It is timed to feed in to a Fast Track Level 3 Counselling Skills course, starting in January 2010.

What about the Money? This is a full cost programme. The 2008/09 fee is 160, plus 36 ABC registration. No fee remission is applicable.
