Course Aims:
1. to meet, when combined with the Certificate in Counselling Skills (Level 3), the current training contact hours requirements for basic training at BACP level for recognition as a qualififed counsellor.

2. To provide further developed skills, including a 100 practice component under supervision.

3. To create a reflective practitioner.

4. To develop a deep understanding of one main therapeutic model (Person Centred) with knowledge of two others.

Course Content:
Course Content/Strucutre
The course content is designed to specially train students as qualified professional counsellors. Their existing repertoire of counselling skills and interventions (developed in the Certificate in Counselling Skills Course) will be further developed with emphasis being given to each skill according to the particular theoretical persuasion (i.e. Person Centred).
Successful completion of this course will not automatically qualify any person for acceptance as an accredited member of the BACP. The course subscribes to BACP Ethical Framework for good Practice in Counsellling and Psychotherapy. There are 7 Units and counselling Placement Component.

Many candidates progress towards national accreditation status with lead bodies i.e. BACP. Some candidates may progress onto Postgraduate courses in counselling studies.

Please Note: On this course additional costs will be incurred by students including;

Personal Therapy - 15-30 per hour
Supervision - 30-45 per session
Residential weekend - 150 approx.
Insurance - 100 approx.
BACP Membership - 70

NB: Students are reponsible for finding their own placements.

Under ABC guidelines family members are not allowed to study in the same peer group.

Notes:

Southport College has a policy and Code of Practice on recruitment of ex-offenders. Please refer to the College website where a copy can be found .

Duration:
The course will consist of 330 guided learning hours to include two residential experiences, or the equivalent and Saturday workshops.
In addition: 100 hours counselling placement with appropriate supervision for each 8 hours of counselling.
* Time for personal therapy/counselling - minimum of 10 hours

Entry Requirement
Those wishing to study at Diploma Level must satisfy the following entrance requirements:
i. Successful completion of the ABC Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or evidence of having met the equivalent standards, including assessment, elsewhere - A reference confirming successful completion of the course will be required.
ii. A successful interview - please note group interview methods will be used in the selection process to assess the ability of candidates to engage in group training methods and to receive honest feedback. Selectors will seek evidence that the candidate''s primary need is not to use the course for personal therapy.
iii. A commitment to a training programme of 430 hours spread over two years (part-time basis).
iv. Two satisfactory references
NB: If a candidate is having personal therapy or is receiving psychiatric treatment, evidence will be sought from an appropriate person, as to their suitability for the course.
Partners and persons in close relationships are not recommended to attend the same course. Evidence indicates that potential damage and impact on the group and their relationship through exposure to counselling training.
