Web Authoring

Level: This is an advanced course leading to an OCR Clait Level 3 (Unit 7 Website Authoring) qualification.

What is the Web Authoring course?
This course is suitable for students with some knowledge of basic web design or for students who have experience in other aspects of design and wish to develop internet based materials. The course teaches basic HTML principles and makes extensive use of Macromedia†s Dreamweaverâ"¢, introducing other elements of the Studio 8 package, including Fireworks and Flash. These will be used to create a small website of the student's own design which forms the basis of the assessment.

Course topics
  • Plan and design a web structure suitable for the purpose of the website
  • Use a variety of web elements to present information and images in a coherent and pleasing manner
  • Use tables, layers and floating boxes to control page layout
  • Use META tags to identify the website and define page content
  • Use style sheets and embedded style to control the appearance of page content
  • Use basic techniques of other applications within the Studio 8 suite to create manipulate and animate basic graphical elements
  • Create dynamic and interactive content including event driven control of behaviour, rollover images etc
  • Embed multimedia objects and provide interactive control of multimedia aspects of page behaviour
  • Implement external plug-ins such as search tools, page counters etc.
  • Create and execute a test plan to ensure that all aspects of the website operate correctly
Teaching and Learning
You will work through a series of structured exercises using a prepared set of resources to develop skills and knowledge. These will then be applied to a website of your own design.

During each lesson there will be a taught element with time available to apply techniques learned to develop your own website with the opportunity for one- to-one support.

Course notes and materials are available on-line allowing further development of your website outside the college.

The course is progressive, building from week to week, using basic skills and techniques in different ways to reinforce learning and develop new skills in a logical manner.

The course will provide an introduction to Fireworks and Flash at a very basic level only.

Assessment details
Assessment is through a portfolio of work compiled throughout the course, leading to an OCR Clait Level 3 unit qualification.

Progression
Courses to improve Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Fireworks skills.

NB The College will be closed on Wednesday evening 4 March 2009

Extra costs : Optional exam fee £19.30, USB memory stick, writing materials and notebook.
