Web Design


Who is this course for?
Students who want to learn the first stage of website design : putting images and text on web pages, making links,layout in tables, independently of a specific software package.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Students must have a solid knowledge and understanid of basic Internet use : using a broswer, web surfing, email. They need good working knowledge of a word processing programme, and good familiarity with personal computers, PC or Mac.

What is the level of the course?
OCN LR Level 2.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?

Learning outcomes including what the student will be able to achieve by the end of the course :
  • Create a minimum of three linked Web pages containing the following
  • A title - Body text of at least 200 words
  • Hypertext links between pages
  • Hypertext link to another location of the same page
  • Hypertext link to another Web site

Change the appearance of Web pages by using codes to:
  • Enhance text
  • Create blank and horizontal lines
  • Insert a background colour
  • Insert an image as background
  • Change the colour of : text links, links visited, link when clicked on
  • Insert an unordered list containing at least 3 items into a Web page
  • Insert an ordered list of at least 3 items into a Web page
  • Use tables to present data in a tabular format in a Web page
  • Identify an appropriate image for a created Web page taking into account file size and format, e.g. jpeg, gif, png - Configure file size and dimensions, maintaining aspect ratio
  • Insert the image into the Web page

What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Smartboard demonstrations, 1 to 1 support, handouts, individual and group tasks and project work supported with verbal and written feedback.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
As well as continuous feedback from your tutor, you will be handing in specific pieces of work which you will achieve during the course. This is portfolio building rather than exams.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
OCN LR certificate : Creating Web Pages Level 2.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Students need to commit to making time outside of class to practice; at home or in the college.

What can I do after completing this course?
Dreamweaver Introduction or Intermediate, Photoshop.

Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course) A USB key is very useful.
