The course aims to explore the prevalence of self-harming behaviours among UK women, why women self harm and associated mental health needs, what methods they use to self harm and what support is available for those who self ham.

About this course
• Define the term “self-harm”• Identify various self-harming behaviours.• Describe key reasons why women self-harm• Describe how to support someone who is self-harming.• Identify key agencies/services to support women who self harm.
No prior experience or knowledge is required. Talking about self-harm is likely to be emotive, especially for those who have been bereaved by suicide. Though all are welcome and encouraged to engage with the class this is not a therapeutic session. Participants should feel they are able to discuss self-harm in a non-judgmental facilitated group. Participants will be advised to consider and manage personal disclosure.

The class will be taught using media articles, first hand accounts, quizzes, videos and group activities.
