This course is designed for care staff to increase their understanding of dementia and to develop appropriate communication skills for dementia clients.

· Understand what dementia is and what its common features are
· Understand the changes in client communication during the progression of the illness
· Adapt their communication style to meet individual client needs
· Empathise with those who have dementia

· The practicalities of working with dementia
· Changes in client communication as the illness progresses
· How to adapt your own communication skills to work with dementia clients
· How to focus on the person and not just their dementia
