Course programme

This course is based on the practical application of theoretical knowledge in a professional setting. You will develop the skills you need to work with older people in the community - residential and day care - and care at home. You will investigate the best ways of delivering this care whilst taking the client's wishes into consideration. You will also look at end-of-life care both from a physical and emotional perspective. 1st year modules: - Person-centred approaches when caring for older people - Personal and professional development - Understanding nutrition for older people - Policy and legislation in the context of older people - Communication and relationship with older people 2nd year modules - Leadership and management - Work-based learning - Applying research methods - Socio-therapeutic skills in older people - End-of-life care - Care in the older community - Cognitive dysfunctions in older people


You will need: - a Level 3 qualification in Health and Care e.g. NVQ, BTEC National Diploma or recognised Access to Higher Education Certificate in a related subject - 2 GCSEs at Grade A*-C in English and Maths or equivalent e.g. Functional Skills Level 2 - Experience of working or volunteering in health and social care - Current clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - Two satisfactory references - Students for whom English is a second language are required to pass the IELTS test achieving a minimum of Level 5.


You will be assessed through coursework, presentations, promotional leaflets, project work and written assignments.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a Foundation Degree (FdA) in Working with Older People. This gives you the opportunity to progress to the final year of BA (Hons) Health and Social Care at London Metropolitan University .
