About the subject

A recognised fitness industry qualification which incorporates two modules: Exercise and Fitness Knowledge and Gym Training.
Awarded by Central YMCA Qualifications, this is a course intended to provide the knowledge base and practical requirements of a qualified fitness instructor.
The course is one year long and you will study a range of subject areas essential for employment as a fitness instructor. Subjects include: Bones and joints, Muscles and muscle actions, Energy systems, Cardio-respiratory system, Components of fitness, Principles of training, Planning to teach gym training, Teaching gym training sessions, Evaluating gym training sessions, Dealing with accidents and emergencies, promoting regular physical activity and Providing customer service

Learning Styles

Teaching methods include: Formal Teaching, discussions and handouts, role-play and group work. A large proportion of your studies will take place within a gym environment.
Learning methods include: Presentations to small groups, use of IT, using work experience in relation to appropriate units.

Subject combinations and progression
This qualification is suitable for those students who wish to work within the sport and leisure industry, particularly in a gym environment. It is an ideal course to run alongside A/S or A2 Physical Education or A/S Leisure Studies but can be accessed by any student studying at Collyer's who holds the Assistant fitness instructor certificate. The qualification will lead to qualification as a qualified fitness instructor at Level 2. Progression is available on our evening courses with the highly respected Level Three qualification in Advanced Fitness Instructing or full Personal Trainer Award.

Unit 4: The cardio-respiratory system
Unit 5: The components of fitness
Unit 6: Warm up
Unit 7: Cool down
Unit 8: Pre-exercise screening
Unit 9: Barriers and motives for exercise
Unit 10: Customer service and dealing with accidents and emergencies
Module 2 - Gym Training
We will prepare you to induct clients onto gym equipment and
to plan and supervise their workouts. We provide knowledge of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment, free weights, individual and group teaching skills and an introduction to circuit training.
