Is this course right for me?

Have you experience of working in community services, youth work sector? This course aims to consolidate knowledge providing a qualification specific to your skills.

What will I be learning?

You will learn the fundamentals of dealing with individuals modules including lifelong learning and understanding research, professional development and reflective practice (work based learning), psychological perspectives, anti-discriminatory practice, social policy and practice and sociological perspectives. Also option modules are available depending on the route of progression which you want to follow. Second year modules include: evidence based practice and professional development (work based learning); community practice; research methodology design and practice; interprofessional practice. There are also option modules which will be studied depending on the route that you wish to progress on to.

How will I learn?

The innovative two year programme allows students to work, earn and learn using flexible modes of education including work based learning and e-learning. The foundation degree will develop relevant skills underpinning them with theoretical knowledge required by youthworkers, and those in public services in a rapidly evolving service. You will be assessed by a combination of essays, reports, presentations and exams.

What else might I want to know?

The FdA Young People and Community Services provides a challenging curriculum which addresses the major contemporary issues of youth and community work. Expert staff, qualified in a range of subject areas, who undertake regular professional development in related sectors, collaborate with Children and Young Peoples Services to ensure the programme consistently meets local and national sector requirements. This collaboration ensures thorough embedding of work based learning into the programme and supports the contextualisation of theory into practice.

What can I do afterwards?

Foundation degree graduates have a range of opportunities within industrial and commercial organisations where a broad-based and work-related education is desirable. Progressions on to the BSc (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice studies (Stage 2) and BSc (Hons) Public Services (Stage 3) at The University of Plymouth, University College Plymouth St Mark and St John: BA (Hons) Working with Children and Young People (Stage 3), University College Plymouth St Mark and St John: BA (Hons) Youth and Community (Stage 2), University College Plymouth St Mark and St John: BA (Hons) Community Practice (Applied Community Studies) Stage 3.
