This course is suitable if you want a JNC-approved qualification or if you are working in a community or education setting working predominantly with young people.
You will be taught to reflect on your role as a practitioner, asked to question and critically evaluate your professional role and create an environment where knowledge transfer and skills develop is encouraged.
The fieldwork practice arrangements required for this course will include two periods of supervised fieldwork practice, which will be 592 hours in total. In line with the National Youth Agency criteria, at least 148 of these 592 hours will be in an alternative practice context. The experience will be in two locations and 50% of the committed time will be with young people in the 13-19 age group. The total number of fieldwork practice hours will be equally divided over the course duration.

About this course

Entry Requirements
An undergraduate degree or equivalent (ideally in the social sciences, humanities or arts areas, such as sociology, sports and leisure management, mentoring, education, theology or psychology). You must also be working in a suitable youth or community work setting, in a paid or voluntary capacity.
UCB's standard English language requirement for Postgraduate study will apply (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent).

Fieldwork Practice (A)
This module is all about working with young people and their communities and working with staff and other agencies. You will work in a suitable environment for a minimum of 10 hours a week or do two block placements for a total of 16 weeks. By doing this, you will complete a minimum of 298 hours of work-based practice. You will also discuss and reflect on your experiences in the classroom, demonstrating how you've achieved this module's objectives.

This module focuses on the development of service provision and management and leadership. You will work in a suitable environment for a minimum of 10 hours a week or do two block placements for a total of 16 weeks. By doing this, you will complete a minimum of 298 hours of work-based practice. You will also discuss, explore and reflect on your experiences in the classroom, demonstrating how you've achieved this module's objectives.
Management and the Youth and Community Professional
You will study historical and current social policies in relation to the provision and management of youth and community services and analyse styles and theories of management and leadership. The principles and practice of developing and managing core organisational culture and change will also be examined.
Masters Dissertation (C & E)
Under the supervision of an appropriately-experienced tutor, you can choose an issue from within the sector to study in-depth to provide greater clarity on industry issues or forward organisational progress. You will have regular personal tutorials to help guide you to plan, research, review and validate your final results and conclusions.
Personal and Professional Change
By reflecting individually and as a group on work processes, dynamics and development, you will be able to assess your own role in relation to responsibility, ethics, trust and power within that group. Theories and concepts relating to the many forms of communications, relationship-building and dynamics will be explored and you will be encouraged to review your own work with young people, communities, your colleagues and other professionals.
Research Methods and Ethics
You will develop and extend your knowledge and ability of professional research, exploring the strategies of critical appraisal and methodology. By using managerial research tools, theoretical perspectives and relative framework you will be able to evaluate the work of others and the principles and practices of ethics in research when considering children and young people.
Social Justice and Youth and Community Development Work
You will examine the principles, practice and theories of youth and community development work historically and in the current context both in the UK and internationally. The roles of identity, diversity and culture will be investigated as well as critical analysis of the legislative framework for anti-discriminatory practice.

Additional information

Teaching & Assessment Full-time route Appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers of postgraduate study carry out the teaching and fieldwork practice preparation/assessment on this programme. Delivery will be through a range of methods including lectures, student led seminars, placement preparation sessions, fieldwork practice and tutorials. There will be class exercises, to facilitate deeper comprehension of analysis, which is required for postgraduate study. A typical teaching week will have: Large group teaching - 4 hours of lectures in lecture rooms Smaller group teaching - 2 hours of seminars each week in small groups discussing topics presented in lectures Tutorials - 2 hours being a mixture of personal, group, directed study and academic tutorials per week Individual Study In addition you are likely to need to commit 10 hours a week of your own study time in preparation for teaching sessions and preparing for and completing assessment.
