What are the Course Details?
This is a pre-entry course for learners wishing to join the Army as trainee Transport Engineers with support from the army including sponsorship through the Army FE Bursury Scheme. The course will allow learners to follow one of the many career pathways which will be open to them after completing the one year full time course.
The course will be four days per week with the majority of that time spent in the Motor Vehicle Workshop.
Learners will study the theory behind how a motor vehicle works and all the major vehicle components, as part of the IMI Vehicle Maintenance and Repair qualification.

If you would like to join the Army, but would also like a year at college and to learn and earn money doing so, this is the ideal course for you to undertake.
What are the Entry Requirements?
To be eligible to join this course you will need three GSCEs at Grade A-C including Maths and English.
There will be two interviews one at the College and a second one with the Army for suitability. You must successfully pass both.
What will I Learn?
The main qualifications are the IMI Vehicle Maintenance and Repair which you will study in two stages: the first stage will be September to January and the second stage January to June.

- Vehicle Tyres, Brakes, Steering and Suspension
- Vehicle Engines
- Vehicle Transmissions
- Vehicle Electrical and Electronic Systems
Stage 2 covers:
- Good Housekeeping
- Health and Safety
- Positive Working Relationships
- Vehicle Maintenance
- Engine Units and Components
- Auxiliary Electrical Units and Components
- Vehicle Chassis Components
- Pre and Post Inspections or Vehicle Transmissions
The course also includes Functional Skills: Communication Level 2, Application of Number Level 2 and IT Level 1.
How will I Learn?
You will learn through a mix of theory and practice. Practical classes will take place in the College's well-equipped motor vehicle workshops, whilst theory classes will be held in the College's laboratories and classrooms.
How will I be Assessed?
You will be practically assessed carrying out tasks during each unit in the College workshops and theoretically assessed with phase tests and online exams at the end of each unit.
What Enrichments are Available?
College enrichment activities are available to each learner and there will also be Army lead activities throughout the year.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
There is a possibility of trips being arranged with the Army.
Is there any Work Experience?
Not at present, but the opportunity of spending time at the TA workshops is a possibility.
What can I Progress to?
Progression is direct entry into the Army, after successfully completing the course.
