Certificate in Exercise for the Management of Low Back Pain

This course also forms part of both the Masters in Corrective Exercise and the Masters in Special Populations

A higher level vocationally related qualification (VRQ), at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. It is also recognised by REPs at Level 4.

As a Level 4 qualification this course provides candidates with a pathway to becoming a REPs Specialist Exercise Instructor. The course has the support of leading industry experts in the field of low back management and will provide students with the tools they will need to deal with clients presenting with on-going low back pain.

Course Content

  • Underpinning knowledge and functional anatomy - including: the influence of exercise/activity/inactivity, a classification of low back pain and the psychosocial components of low back pain.
  • Exercise referral processes and communication skills - including: understanding the referral process, relevant medico-legal requirements, understanding scope of practice and communicating skills.
  • Assessment and screening - including:identifying referrals; precautions and contraindications, psychosocial assessment and functional/physical assessment.
  • Programme design - including: progressive programme design considerations; providing psychosocial support, establishing and monitoring exercise quotas and intensity.

Length and Format of Course

The course includes 2 workshop and 1 assessment day and is supported by online learning materials. It is estimated that the course will take 2 months to complete. Tutor support will be available throughout the course.
