Exercise to Music
The course is workshop based, but also contains distance elements and compulsory assessments enabling students to gain the confidence and practical skills to plan and teach an exercise to music (aerobics) class. The course also covers the theoretical knowledge to be able to advise people on exercise programmes within the studio environment as a fully qualified aerobics instructor.
Course Structure - Programme Modules
Exercise and Fitness Knowledge Level 2
This is a distance learning course supported by workbooks and a fully interactive CD Rom. If you think you may already have the knowledge required for this module, try the on-line Mock Theory Test - you may be able to get exemption from this module and just sit the final examination.
Concepts of Fitness
This element discusses the difference between total and physical fitness. Within this you will be able to describe the relationship between physical fitness and health related fitness and the components of each.
Bones and Joints
The anatomical structure of the skeleton and its physiological relationships to exercise and fitness. Bone structure and function is discussed along with the major joints of the body and their movement potential. Muscles The anatomical structure of the skeletal muscles and their physiological relationship to exercise and fitness. Identify major muscles and particular types of muscle (i.e Voluntary, Involuntary) and the basic structure of them.
Kinesiology
The skills to analyse an exercise and identify the joints and muscles involved will be covered here. This is an essential skill for the instructor to be able to identify safe and effective exercises for an individual.
Energy Systems
Covers the physiological processes involved in the release of energy for muscular contraction and relates this to how significant it is in physical activity. Nutrition Food is central to our lives. Within this section you will identify and learn about the three energy nutrients in the body. The importance of vitamins, minerals and water and their function will also be covered. From this information students will learn how to advise effectively on weight management issues.
Cardiorespiratoy Systems
On completion of this element a basic understanding of the anatomical structure and the physiological function of the heart, lungs and circulatory system and their relationship to exercise activity and fitness will be gained.
Assessment
All candidates are required to complete a one hour multiple choice theory paper in exam conditions
Exercise to Music
This is a five day practical course for the aspiring aerobics instructor.
Use of music
Understand the song structure, beats, phrases and how to use them in an exercise to music context. Essential teaching skills To teach an Exercise to Music class safely and effectively requires many skills including effective communication, observation and exercise correction.
Choreography
Learn the basic ETM moves and how to progress these moves to ensure your class is fun, exciting and effective. Preparing people for exercise Introducing your class and essential warm up skills are needed to ensure your participants are ready to do their workout.
Class design and structure
Learn how to design your class so that the different components run in a logical and effective order and sequence to maximise comfort and safety for your class.
Muscular strength and endurance training
An essential part of the Exercise to Music workout; learn how to design and structure work for specific muscle groups such as your abs and lower back.
Cardiovascular training
Learn about effective cardio vascular exercise in an Exercise to Music context and how to link moves and choreography together to ensure a progressive and smooth aerobic workout to suit a mixed ability group.
Relaxation and stretching
Understand basic flexibility techniques and how to apply them to the Exercise to Music class structure. Also how to relax your class effectively should they want to.
Health and safety
As an instructor you are responsible for the safety of your class whether through written and verbal screening or ensuring the space is clear to use.
Assessment
Candidates will produce a single detailed written plan for a safe and effective Exercise to Music session of 45 minutes in duration and present this class in front of an assessor.
Exams are scheduled approximately 3 weeks after the course and candidates are required to bring along 2 people on the day of their examination. Please contact us for more information regarding the dates and locations of the assessments and taught element of the course.
